Commission FAQs

What do the Commissioners do?

The Commissioners act as the governing body of the County. They are elected every four years and enact policies such as the establishment of the property tax rate and the adoption of the budget. They adopt ordinances or local laws that govern issues such as development, noise, animal control and the environment.

You can view the Buncombe County budget here.

When do they meet?

The Commissioners meet every first and third Tuesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. at 30 Valley Street in downtown Asheville.

Can I attend a meeting and speak?

All Commission meetings are open to the public and public comment is taken at the end of every meeting. You will be called by the Chairman and given 3 minutes to make comments.

Are their meetings televised?

Yes, you can see every County Commission meeting (and much more) on the County Government Channel — BCTV Channel 2 — if you are a Charter Cable TV customer. If you are not a Charter Cable subscriber, you can watch the meetings online here.
